TNRD Update for March 2010
Delegates from Three Volunteer Fire Departments, Loon Lake, Green Lake and 70 Mile House met with TNRD Emergency Services Director Terry Kress and Representatives from Kamloops Fire Centre and Cariboo Fire Centre to pass on all of the vital information necessary to start Community Wildfire Protection Plans in each area. Our very dry winter has everyone concerned about fuel reduction on Crown Land. There are no funds available to help private landowners with fuel reduction. It is suggested that we work with our neighbours, if you have small burn piles that you plan to burn, please contact your local Volunteer Fire Department so that they co-ordinate a time that they can be on the alert.
Provincial Emergency Preparedness Staff, TNRD and Forestry met with residents that live in the area affected by last years Kelly Creek Fire. Homes that were saved from fire last year may be in danger of landslide and flooding from the burnt off mountainside above their homes. Residents will be ever vigilante for signs of heavy rainfall and or extremely warm weather that may cause a heavy snowmelt.
The warm winter hasn’t been great for winter recreation, snowmobilers are wandering around looking very sad or hauling their machines to higher ground. Ice Fishing is still good and people are already out riding horses and ATV’s. Just a message for ATV and dirt bike riders, horses may be afraid of the noise from your machines and that might put riders in danger. Please either go around the horses or shut down your machines to let them by, we are all out there together for enjoyment.
